The Queen of the Blues is from Tuscaloosa. In 1924, the future queen she was born as Ruth Lee Jones in Tuscaloosa . Her family later moved to Chicago and Ruth Lee Jones became Dinah Washington.
Even-though she died at the age of 39, she accomplished a lot in her life time. She won a Grammy in 1959 for "What A Difference A Day Makes", she ran her own booking agency, and she is recognized as one of the most influential vocalists of the twentieth century.
This Thursday Dinah's son Robert Grayson is going to be in Tuscaloosa as the Oak City bestows a great honor on The Queen of the Blues, having a street re-named in honor of her. The dedication will be unveiled March 12, 2009 at 10:30 am at Kaulton Park as 30 Ave becomes Dinah Washington Avenue. Read More For Video.
