A New Way To See Tuscaloosa

   I recently came across a cool photoblog of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa Daily Photo.
The blog consists of a picture or pictures from places in Tuscaloosa. The cool thing is that there are new pictures posted every day and an in-depth caption that goes with the photo giving some background infor and histroy history of the place in the picture.

Dexateens New Album

Since 1997 Tuscaloosa band the Dexateens have gone from a young loud punk rock band that could to a Black Flag meets Blackfoot meets Black Oak band that can.

The City of Tuscaloosa Wants to Hear From You

Want to know what the city's building downtown? Concerned about a public safety issue? Have a great idea to improve your neighborhood? Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox wants to hear it all.

Maddox, Council Members and the City's Department Heads will welcome residents this Thursday at the first of four Community Conversations. The town-hall type forums are part of an effort to further the core belief expressed by city leaders that Tuscaloosa be a customer-friendly environment where city operations are open, effective and efficient. Firefighters and Bagpipes

   The Tuscaloosa News has a great article about Tuscaloosa firefighters/bagpipers.
   In November of 2008, Tuscaloosa firefighter Eric O’Neil "...founded the department’s chapter of the Emerald Society, an organization dating back to the mid-1800s that celebrates Irish heritage within law enforcement and firefighting departments across the country. A major element of an Emerald Society is the bagpipe and drum bands." Read more »

Artists: Apply now for Earthfest '09

Andrea Mabry is the person to contact if you, a University student, faculty or staff member would like to have your work displayed at Earthfest 2009.  Apply soon so you can show Tuscaloosa whatever it is that you do. 

If you're not an artist, that's ok!  Earthfest is for everybody!  There are going to be acitivities for all ages!  There will be live music all day long, featuring Skullduggery, The Hypsys, Plato Jones, and PH Delicious.  For the youngins there will be activities like a recycled box maze and all sorts of crafts, including crafts using recycled materials.  All this excitement will be happening on the West side of the Quad from 10:00 am until sundown on April 19th. 15 years of Pain - New DVD to come out this spring

   From 1994 to the year 2000 one of the greatest indie punk rock bands of all time was based in Tuscaloosa: Pain. This is how the band defined themselves:

1. A musical group comprised of six dumb males, one voluptuous female, and a drummer. Lots of horns and lots of good times. A healthy new dose on the old school punk tip with fresh new grooves to widen your smile. 2. Plenty of nice melodies, wrapped around lyrics about kooky kids, lovely girls and people we hate. Queen of the Blues: Street named in honor

   The Queen of the Blues is from Tuscaloosa. In 1924, the future queen she was born as Ruth Lee Jones in Tuscaloosa . Her family later moved to Chicago and Ruth Lee Jones became Dinah Washington.
   Even-though she died at the age of 39, she accomplished a lot in her life time. She won a Grammy in 1959 for "What A Difference A Day Makes", she ran her own booking agency, and she is recognized as one of the most influential vocalists of the twentieth century.
   This Thursday Dinah's son Robert Grayson is going to be in Tuscaloosa as the Oak City bestows a great honor on The Queen of the Blues, having a street re-named in honor of her.  The dedication will be unveiled March 12, 2009 at 10:30 am at Kaulton Park as 30 Ave becomes Dinah Washington Avenue.  Read More For Video.
